Construction

Site cards for far-sighted young people

A speaker at the graduation ceremony for our construction industry readiness workshop

Following the success of our ongoing horticulture initiative, we're developing basic construction skills work and study programmes for people identified as or at risk of becoming NEETs. We ran a pilot entry to the construction industry course for young adults from the Leatherhead area with untapped potential who want to embark upon a career pathway into the construction industry in July 2026.

About the course

The unique two week construction industry readiness workshop was delivered by MIT Skills Ltd at Therfield School and was sponsored by local businesses, Kier Group and KBR.

During the course, we introduced nine young men and one young woman to all the various roles and competencies within the construction sector and registered them for a CSCS card allowing them to work on a local construction site to enhance their skills.

Participants completed a comprehensive set of certifications and site-ready skills including:

  • Emergency First Aid
  • Fire Marshall Training
  • Traffic Marshalling
  • Use of Power Tools and Manual Handling
  • Measuring Materials
  • General Logistics Process and Practices
  • CSCS Card Test
  • Level 1 Award Health and Safety within the Construction Environment

As well as tuition from the experienced trainers at MIT Skills, the course included a visit to the Taylor Wimpey development at Sondes Meadows in Dorking to see how a field of grassland can be sustainably converted into a village of attractive new homes and team building at a sporting event at St John's School.

To help with their progression, partcipants were also given advice on job hunting, local colleges and apprenticeships.

"Thank you for my opportunity - it has changed my life."

After the course

Following on from the successful pilot, most of the young people graduating from the course have now successfully sat the assessment for the CSCS Card which is an essential gateway into a site workplace experience for anyone wanting to move into a career in any part of the construction sector.

They are now lined up for interview for apprenticeships or In-house skills training for a wide range of construction trades - from chippies and electricians to heavy plant drivers and site safety officers.

What next

We're now looking to set up and fund more courses to take place in 2027 and beyond. If you can help with this, please get in touch with us.
